Here is my quick 5 minute tutorial for adjusting a photo that has a neutral or facial frown expression magically into a smile with Adobe Photoshop and the puppet tool. While there are many ways that you can achieve this effect, I have found this technique to provide the best most convincing manipulation
Of course, with just about any image, it will take experimenting and tweaking to make the adjustments to your individual image seem realistic. This tutorial should get you on the right path on how to make someone smile in photoshop.
So many ways to create this effect
Now don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of the ways you can make someone smile in photoshop. Honestly, there may be no fewer than 12 different techniques you could deploy in Photoshop to make this effect possible. The technique I’m going to show you here is probably considered an intermediate level adjustment. The fundamental skills should allow you to grasp the concept which you can then add your own style and technique and give it your own flair. If you come across any technical issues please let me know. Of course, as time goes on and Adobe Photoshop CC improves this lesson may need adjusting.
15,000 Views and Going Strong
After almost 15,000 views and numerous questions, I feel that this tutorial being under five minutes is pretty effective. I do plan on making an expanded version that will handle some of the more challenging tasks on more complex imagery.
When I was making this video I did some research on making someone smile in photoshop. I was surprised to discover that most of the tutorials were rather inaccurate or simply a long drawn out method to get mediocre results.
As in any of these Photoshop tutorials, the one thing it will say is that you should consider doing less versus doing more. What I mean by that is sometimes you’re trying to achieve the goal when only a slight subtle change in the facial expression is needed. This is where the term micro expressions come into play. Either way, you should be able to make someone smile in photoshop now without much fuss.
